About the Department of Sustainability

Sustainability became a core focus of county leadership with the hiring of its first Sustainability Manager in 2010, eventually becoming an office underneath Facilities Management. In recent years, the county has reduced its carbon footprint through increased waste diversion, energy and water efficiency efforts, renewable energy purchases and installations, conversion of fleet vehicles and equipment to alternative fuels, sustainable procurement, encouraging sustainable development, and more. In 2023 the Office of Sustainability became the new Department of Sustainability, created for the continual coordination and implementation of sustainable practices within the county government.
