The recently completed Bouldering Park and Pump Track facility at Allegheny County’s Boyce Park in Monroeville is a one-of-a-kind outdoor recreational space for the southwestern PA region, and unique even at a national level. It is one of the largest free outdoor bouldering wall sites in the country, offering over 6,000sf of climbing challenges. The paved pump track, at nearly 800’ long, is the largest in the region. These types of outdoor activities are well-known to adventurers who may rock-climb or mountain bike in locales in and around Allegheny County, and are now offered to the general public at a convenient and accessible location.

Pump Track

The pump track is a closed loop track consisting of two components: rollers and berms. Rollers are the small hills (bumps or waves) built into the track, and berms serve as rounded corners.

Pump tracks are a great alternative to conventional bike parks as the track design means a bike doesn't require pedaling or pushing to move. Riders are able to take advantage of the “pumping” action–an up and down body motion–to maintain momentum. These specialty tracks can help riders develop handling, control, and balance skills as they navigate the terrain.

Climbing Walls

Bouldering is a type of climbing that doesn't require the use of a rope or harness, as it's typically done on shorter walls and formations. Throughout the year, the bouldering walls in Boyce Park will be rearranged for consistently new challenges and opportunities to develop balance, strength, endurance, and problem-solving skills.

About the Park

The project is intended for use by people of all ages and skill levels, and even features a playground and a climbing boulder for young children. Seating and lush new landscaping are integrated throughout the site, including two rain gardens that will clean and filter stormwater runoff. A flush restroom is slated for installation within the next year.

The original idea for the project came from a 2020 study completed by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, and Pittsburgh-based landscape architecture and planning firm, Environmental Planning & Design. The report assessed opportunities to expose more people, especially those in underserved urban and suburban Pittsburgh-area neighborhoods, to outdoor sports like rock climbing. Climbing has consistently been of the fastest-growing recreational activities, thought it's one that many do not get exposure to. The location in Boyce Park, adjacent to the existing skate park and wave pool, was identified as a prime opportunity for such a facility.
