Allegheny County Jail Announces Death of an Incarcerated Individual

PITTSBURGH – Acting Warden Shane T. Dady today reported the death of an incarcerated individual that occurred at the Allegheny County Jail intake department. The individual, a 53-year-old woman, was brought into the facility on a felony possession charge on Friday, Sept. 13.

“We offer our condolences to the deceased and their family,” Dady said. “We have invested time and effort to assess our processes in intake and throughout the facility to identify and provide care to those who are most vulnerable. We will continue striving to provide the best possible care to our residents.”

On Saturday morning, the individual experienced a medical incident in the intake department. A medical emergency was called at approximately 7:30 a.m., and jail healthcare staff attempted lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived and took over. The individual was declared deceased by emergency responders at 7:56 a.m.

The investigation has been turned over to the county police and an internal review will be conducted. Identification of the incarcerated individual, as well as cause and manner of death, will be released publicly by the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner according to its protocols. 

The ACJ is in the process of notifying the individual’s emergency contact.
