Municipal Information

Address Management is the central group in Allegheny County which supports other County departments that have address central databases. Address Management is the primary point of contact for all communications with municipal government officials and their addressing points of contact, as well as the US Post Office to help synchronize both of our systems.

911/Emergency Services does not maintain a separate file, so communication regarding addresses must go through this office. The Property Assessment Office uses our data to update parcel addresses, so we can receive updates for that as well, as they must review our data first.

The addressing database is a comprehensive geographic point database that does or will include addresses for every building or site that is or should be addressed. This is the most comprehensive database in the county. We also have a centerline file, point of interest file, and other associated records.

Address assignment responsibility lies with the local municipality, though. Local boroughs, townships, and cities have authority for addressing within the municipality. The US Post Office does not assign new addresses. New subdivision plans, new addresses, or corrections to existing addresses are sent to the county and the US Post Office.

Allegheny County’s role is to oversee the central address database for the county and review and update its data on a daily basis. When conflicts between addresses or street spellings, missing addresses, or duplicated addresses are found in any of the county records, Address Management may request that the local borough, township, or city verify the correct address or street name and then may assist in any assignment at the municipality request.

Local municipalities must correspond all address assignments or changes to the county.

Municipalities should be accessing the County GIS (Geographic Information Systems) data as a reference of what we have in our records or possibly use within their systems.

  • It is always recommended to refer to our GIS website to see the county’s address points and centerlines as well as the parcel layer.
  • The GIS Data is also available for use in the GIS software as well, but can also be used in tabular format, such as excel.

There are Address Management Standards that should be followed when assigning addresses or correcting addresses.
