A City of Firsts, A Region of Innovation

There is no place on the planet that can demonstrate a tradition of innovation equal to Allegheny County’s. The following list is just a sampling of some of the amazing innovations and events that have occurred as a result of Allegheny County and its pioneering people:
- The Steelers were the first NFL team to win 4 Super Bowls.
- The Steelers were the first NFL team to win 6 Super Bowls.
- America’s first Business College opened here in 1840.
- A Pittsburgher first distilled refined petroleum and started the oil industry.
- During the Civil War, the Fort Pitt Foundry built the first ironclad war ships.
- John Arbuckle packaged the first ground coffee.
- In 1881, Pittsburgh became the birthplace of labor unions.
- Andrew Carnegie built his first library in Braddock.
- Professional football was born on the North Side with the first paid player in 1892.
- The first Ferris Wheel was built here in 1893.
- The Pittsburgh Pirates hosted the first World Series in 1903.
- Pittsburghers invented the banana split, built the first movie theater and first gas station.
- In 1909, Forbes Field became the first steel and concrete stadium in America.
- Pittsburgh’s Nellie Bly became the first female war correspondent.
- Pittsburgh saw the first road map for motorists, the first Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, and the first-ever Bingo game.
- Pittsburghers heard the first radio broadcast of phonograph records, and KDKA—the first commercial radio station—also broadcast the first presidential election, first baseball game and first church service.
- The Cathedral of Learning at Pitt was the first University Skyscraper.
- Isaly’s introduced the Klondike bar in 1929.
- Stainless steel was invented here.
- Pittsburghers invented the Zippo lighter, the Ice Capades, and the Jeep.
- Jonas Salk developed his polio vaccine at the University of Pittsburgh.
- Alcoa built the first aluminum skyscraper.
- In 1954, WQED became the first educational television station, home to Mister Rogers Neighborhood.
- The first atomic submarine and first atomic-powered electric plant powered up here in 1958.
- The Big Mac was created here.
- The first EMT program began here, and the Mr. Yuk sticker was born here.
- In 1971, the Pirates boasted the first all minority lineup in the National League, and the first night-time World Series game was played here.
- Carnegie Mellon University founded the first Robotics Institute in the world.
- In the 1980s, UPMC doctors pioneered advances in defibrillation and organ transplantation, including the first simultaneous heart/liver/kidney transplant.
- In 1992, Pittsburgh christened Robot Rx–the first automated prescription machine.
- Founded in 1995, MyCoupons.com was America's very first online coupon site and originator of the online coupon, coupon code and shopping web forum.
- The David Lawrence Convention Center became the world’s largest “green” building.
- In 2004, researchers used the first-ever 3-D protein patch to repair living tissue.
