• During the Civil War, the Fort Pitt Foundry built the first ironclad war ships.

• In 1881, Pittsburgh became the birthplace of labor unions.
• Andrew Carnegie built his first library in Braddock.
• Professional football was born on the North Side with the first paid player in 1892.
• The first Ferris Wheel was built here in 1893.
• The Pittsburgh Pirates hosted the first World Series in 1903.
• Pittsburghers invented the banana split, built the first movie theater and first gas station.
• In 1909, Forbes Field became the first steel and concrete stadium in America.
• Pittsburgh’s Nellie Bly became the first female war correspondent.
