Allegheny County is hiring lifeguards for seasonal employment at all four county pools:

Lifeguard Requirements

Allegheny County lifeguard applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Age 15 and over
  • Complete all Lifeguard Employment Forms(PDF, 267KB)
  • Pass the Aquatics Test
  • Possess current Lifeguard Certification
  • Work the entire swimming season, including flexible hours, weekends, and holidays

Returning lifeguards in good standing, and applicants 18 years or older, will be given preference during the application process.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass background checks as required for the position.

Certifications

The American Red Cross and Allegheny County offer a two day, in-person, skills and training for water, first aid, and CPR/AED. Participants who complete the course requirements will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, valid for a two-year period.

  • Must be age 15 or older
  • Pre-registration is required
  • Class fee for residents: $250.00
  • Class fee for non-residents: $312.00

Step 4.Reimbursement Qualifications

Applicants who receive a two-year American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification through Allegheny County and meet the following criteria may be eligible to receive full reimbursement of the certification fee, equivalent to $250.00 (resident fee).

Reimbursement Eligibility:

  1. Complete and obtain a Lifeguard Certification through an Allegheny County sponsored course
  2. Complete and pass the Allegheny County swim test
  3. Complete all paperwork and be employed at one of the county pools for a minimum of 225 hours during the season 

Aquatics Test

The Aquatics Test consists of seven individual skills and knowledge sections, including six in-water skills tests and one multiple-choice written test. Test sections can be completed in any order, and may be retaken to attempt a higher score if desired. A section retest must be completed on the same day as original section test.

Step 2.Day-Of Testing Requirements

Applicants must either bring the completed packet of Lifeguard Employment Forms(PDF, 267KB) to the swim test or email the completed forms to lifeguards@alleghenycounty.us. Applicants must also supply their own lifeguard-appropriate bathing suit and towel for the test.
